What the heck bros, I tought 10K drives in RAID0 with write caching on both controller and windows was supposed to be fast, but it took like 10 min to extract nt5src.7z and probably more for the 2k3 cabs, I bet my HDD from 2005 would smoke this trash array from 2 years earlier, dual P3 were almost idle the entire time.

It is *not* GNU/Linux that runs even on toasters, it is Linux. I mean, without corporate support, money and development, Linux would not be that popular, and they choose It because it is widespread and people know how to use It. Corps can decide the direction of the development and even cease to develop It in favour of other OSes; if that happened, Linux would be developed only by real hackerz and will soon die, and the whole GNU toolchain with it (i mean, without Linux using it, who would develop GCC? Clang is more modern and more understandable). So, since It is not "free" in spite of GNU/Linux nerd people say, we should say GNU/Linux does not really run on toasters, nor its freedom does: only Corps run on toasters

I guess that another reason why got used so much is because company really don't have the time nor the money to make custom OS every time. I agree linux is good on embedded stuff common using ANY distro is always a pain. You waste more time than the time you need to do the thing.

I think Microsoft is tired of looking for competent developers to develop NT.
A reasonable thing would be just using Linux and adding compatibility for legacy crap, because Linux is easier to maintain.
Not impossible - they already did it when they upgraded from DOS to NT just like MacOS was upgraded to Darwin.
Once Wine/Proton has 100% compatibility, Microsoft will just move everything into the botnet and it will be SaaSS and Azure.

But porting this shit to Linux might be beneficial at the end - being a platinum member in the Linux Foundation costs only $0.5M yearly and the kernel basically writes itself.
Developing NT must be much more expensive.
Also by porting their shit to Linux, they solve two problems: Wine and ReactOS become obsolete, they EEE GNU/Linux and they have one platform for both servers and desktop.
It is crazy, but not impossible.

Just add a Linux kernel module to have custom kernel extensions/blobs/running in ring0 along with Linux kernel, you take the nt kernel (a few hundreds KB), modify/relocate/edit interrupt vector/add glue code to it/whatever, put It inside this priviledged blob wrapper and voilà, now Linux implements the full NT kernel api

We need a wiki, the first task is to find the starting point, the exact entry point.
Then we have to find out how things are loaded as modules into the kernel.
Then we have to find out how libraries are dynamically linked and how the memory paging system works.
That diagram might be a good starting point. I bet Microsoft shared information with universities who participated in their Operating System education program.

I don't see were is that parasitism... I've fast checked git commit history. So far "Katahiro" only works in userland user32, language stuff and some gdi font stuff. I have not seen his name in the list of the people who has contributed big chunks to kernel (which was re/written mostly by "tkreuzer" and "aionescu" guys). katahiro guy work is supported by others work in kernel and other system parts, not the inverse, so it can't be taken as parasitism.

You can mostly use IDA's patch function to get around the obfuscated bits, obfuscation seems to pretty much be replacing certain code blocks with a jmp to obfuscated shit instead, eg.

I just patched the jmp to the obfuscation so it jmps directly to the code block after it instead, mostly seems to help fix HexRays output etc. It's pretty easy to tell when there's an obfuscated block too.
You miss out on whatever they hid behind the obfuscation though ofc, but comparing the decompilation to win2000's code showed them almost matched, I'd guess the obfuscation is probably just around WPA/licensing shit that they added in.
(though if someone wants to work on the actual obfuscation itself I won't stop them...)

All the code in "perpetual" pending stage is from coders who never was capable to justify what they wrote, which is taken then as possible dirty reverse engineering with IDA/Ghidra, and thus will never be accepted, until that person can prove the contrary. Is easy spot some of that code even still has some autogenerated HexRays style variables the owner forgot to remove for whatever reason.

In any case, what kills these "efforts" is the real desire to really work in the forks. So far, all the ReactOS clones end in being only rebranded crap with changed logos. No commits to Kernel, nor system modules... Damn, not even attempts to make Wine syncs of the code... Nothing. That's what kill them, not ReactOS team.

Visions are always great, but actually maintaining shit that big is painful and it definitely needs more manpower than just like 4 dudes doing this in their free time.

When i was running XP i had little to non Memory leaks, no (((100% disk))), roughly zero freezes. required minimum resources, almost symbolically. Background software never crashed, in fact I did not know that Java or Flash could crash once a week just because Windows 10.
I'm pretty sure I do not romanticize out of nostalgia but I think XP was much more reliable when it came to system stability and resource use.

You are **not** wearing nostalgia glasses, believe me. Over the course of its existence, NT 5.x was eventually brought to near perfection regarding its stability and functionality.

The only reason M$ did Vista and eventually 10 is because they needed to sell a new version of Windows each and every 3 years to keep themselves afloat. But instead of doing real proper improvements to the core, they fucked up the UI. And instead of making the OS less dependent on hardware it's installed on, they added a crapton of DRM. You could backup an XP installation by mere copying the entire drive in Explorer, then unpacking it back and fixing the bootloader (which is a piece of cake if you have a recovery CD) and voila - a working system. With hardlinks all over the place, this becomes an impossible task if you don't have partition cloning tools.

What are the problems here? They finally fixed the selection of the correct HAL at boot, moved all their shit to ARM. They quite worked on it.

He messed up postbuild in that vid, postbuild.err should have been a lot longer, and shouldn't say "errors encountered, exiting...", might want to look at the parameters he gave to postbuild.

Here's an example of a working srv-only postbuild btw, created 450246656 byte ISO fine with this.
Didn't need to overwrite 2+ hours of building with precompiled stuff neither, just used the missing.7z to add the crap we don't have source for.

Anyways, I finally got XP set up on bare metal. It's definitely the most powerful hardware I've ever used it on. I even got a 10k RPM HDD since XP will write SSDs to death. All set up with a cozy theme and modern-ish browser. I have a Quadro NVS 295 I wanted to use for this system but it appears to be going bad (graphical glitches and system freezes) but I'll try repasting and cleaning the pins with rubbing alcohol tomorrow and maybe check to see if it's a driver problem (doubtful).

PS - If anyone is having trouble with XP USB installation due to missing files, try easy2boot. Shit just works.

finally caught up with the threads
clean windows 7sp1 install 32bit mostly builds fine I would suggest considering the nature of the project relying on PAE patches and a 32bit OS, 12 threads only shaves off about 20-30 minutes from build over 4 threads
haven't updated my build with the latest guide will do so tomorrow
I'm not really clear where I could help currently, I might look at the build scripts or something, most of this is a bit out of my experience, aswell as a lack of clear direction on what's being worked on...
errors during build were
MSVC50.dll is missing
NTDVM.exe repeatedly stops working
fatal error U1077: 'lib16' : return code '0x2'
com\ole32\olethunk\ole16\tools\mapsym.exe is not a valid win32 application

Yeah I know, and I am >>78201653 but I wanted to know if it's possible to build 64-bit XP using the leaked source code. I don't own any 32-bit x86 machines anymore and if I'm gonna run an outdated OS I want to get the most out of the hardware. In some cases it might be easier to port programs from other platforms where 64-bit hardware has been the assumed default for a decade or more, so it has more of a future ahead of it. The 3-4GB memory limit is also a pretty brutal restriction if you wanna do tasks like image or video editing.

A lack of trim support isn't good but it's not the end of the world if you don't fill the SSD above 80%. But I've heard it has more to do with partition alignment and some important application writing to the disk a lot. Can't remember what exactly but the lifespan of your SSD under Windows XP will be about 1-2 years of regular use which is pretty abysmal.

Okay so I know this dude who's dad has worked at MS for a pretty long time and apparently he has access to Windows 7 SP1 source code, but he can't really share it because he's afraid of termination of his employment, because the source has his signature on it so if MS downloads and checks it, they'll figure its he who leaked it

there's countless ways to watermark files, so nobody could tell you without actually figuring out what ms has done to it (which involves looking at the code/files you have)

Partition alignment is a pain in the butt for 4k sector HDDs too. This is why Samsung and Paragon released their free alignment tools back in the day.

As for 1-2 years of lifespan - same shit applies to Vista+ if you do not move fucking swap file and hibernation out of SSD. In fact, never put your swap onto SSD, unless you wish it a quick and painful death. Disable the fucker entirely if you have more than 8 gigs of RAM (4+ in case of XP x64) - you'll notice a huge performance boost on resource-heavy applications too.

AMD GPU support is a bit worse actually, only goes up to R9 270x, but you can get a GTX 980Ti working on XP.

If he has the complete tree, he can just revert it to the RTM state of the source, in this case SP1 RTM state, do a clean build to kill the lab tag, do a search and remove any certificates created by him (driver.pfx or similars) and remove perforce or any other source control sync files.
If he has only fragments, will be more difficult, if not impossible, as they will attempt to trace via diffing with master for changes, and who actually commit these changes, and thus had access when the files were checked.

I think its a waste of time trying to get the entire codebase building that is not important, windows is modular, we can take missing dlls from the release version.

kernel32, user32, gdi32, ntdll, ntoskrnl, win32k.sys, hal.dll, these are the important components, we should be working on bringing these up to SP2 equivalence.

It's great that people are pushing on, but it's pretty hard to follow updates in this form.
